Student Life Dorm Environment Checklist

A dorm is a living space, and it should feel like home while giving students full access to language. Use this checklist to set up and review a residential environment that works for deaf and hard of hearing students. It covers recognizing ASL and English throughout the space, from posted rules and schedules to labels and a well-stocked dorm library with ASL storybook videos and books reflecting Deaf lives; creating a warm, home-like feel with comfortable seating, student artwork, and personal touches; and keeping the space safe and accessible with clear routines, visual expectations, and quiet areas for rest.
